As part of this moment, the International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing calls us to look beyond the surface: protecting our oceans is not only about preserving ecosystems. It is about building a blue economy that is truly just and sustainable.
A blue economy can only thrive on solid foundations: healthy seas, responsibly managed fisheries, and fishing communities operating within fair and transparent systems. IUU Fishing erodes those foundations. It undercuts fishers who play by the rules, depletes fish stocks, and weakens the economic resilience of coastal communities whose livelihoods depend on a well-governed ocean.
For coastal communities, including the fisherwomen who are GISLI’s partners, the threat of IUU Fishing is anything but abstract. It is a real and present danger to their livelihoods, food security, and the future of their families.
Fighting IUU Fishing means protecting the ocean, strengthening the blue economy, safeguarding food security, and supporting the future of empowered coastal communities.
