A significant development promises to transform Indonesia’s coastal communities—the launch of the Indonesian Maritime Safety Legal Initiative (GISLI) on May 25, 2023. This launch marks a new era in the pursuit of sustainable economic resilience and gender equality within the maritime sector.
The journey to GISLI’s launch began with pivotal research conducted by Setyawati Fitrianggraeni from Anggraeni and Partners. This research was presented at the Third International Women’s Conference organized by the World Maritime University in Malmo, Sweden in 2019. The study, titled “Building Business, Enriching Lives: an Indonesian Initiative to Empower Women in the Fishing Communities” of Tegal and Wonogiri, Central Java, explored the potential for organizing fishermen’s wives into cooperatives, aiming to enhance their socio-economic status and ensure a sustainable business model that supports community welfare.
Further insights from this study were shared in discussions at various platforms, including the National Resilience Institute of Indonesia (LEMHANNAS). Here, Fitrianggraeni promoted the “Optimization of Fishermen’s Cooperatives as Competitive Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)” to enhance community welfare and contribute to Indonesia’s economic security.
Engaging with local fishing communities in Wonogiri, Central Java, and Ambulu, East Java, was crucial in refining the cooperative development approach, focusing on real-world applications and community feedback. These interactions were key in shaping policies and programs that align with the government’s objectives to enhance maritime safety and community prosperity.
GISLI’s formation is not just a result of academic and policy discussions but a proactive step towards implementing practical solutions identified through years of research. The initiative aims to protect maritime interests by fostering legal frameworks and safety measures, promoting gender equality, and enhancing the economic welfare of coastal communities through sustainable business practices.
