Maritime Safety Campaign: Toward Zero Accidents
Organized by the Directorate General of Sea Transportation—Ministry of Transportation, Republic of Indonesia
The recent Maritime Safety Campaign in Ternate highlighted a unified commitment to strengthening a culture of maritime safety in the eastern Indonesian archipelago. This event brought together stakeholders from the government, military, police, shipping cooperatives, and civil society — including the active participation of GISLI.
One of the key moments of the campaign was an interview conducted with a local fisherfolk, who shared first-hand experiences of the risks faced at sea and the critical need for accessible, community-based safety education. The dialogue was led by Orima Melati Davey, Senior Researcher at GISLI, whose work continues to amplify the voices of small-scale fishers and coastal communities.
Through initiatives like this, we are reminded that sustainable maritime development requires collaborative, inclusive action grounded in the realities faced by those who rely on the sea every day.
